In The Gutter

Quote pg. 13

"My father's hardscrabble life also left him with a burning desire to get rich. History is full of stories of men over coming poverty to amass great fortunes in steel or pig farming."

I don't understand why people think if they come to America they will become rich. This is not the case at all. Most people work hard for the money they earn. People go bankrupted and poor everyday. Not everyone in America is rich like everyone puts us out to be. Many people struggle just to get by. I think people in other countries need to learn that we struggle as a country as well.

Quote pg. 14

"At some point someone must have yelled Good job, Kaz! which my father interpreted as You should go on television and win a fortune!"

I thought it was funny that Firoozeh's father took a compliment this way. It makes me wonder what other things we say, mean a different thing to people. It makes me wonder if Firoozeh's father was full of himself or he actually thought someone meant that when they said good job.

Hot Dogs and Wild Geese

Quote pg. 9

"We wondered how my father had managed to spend several years attending school in America."

Firoozeh's father made it seem like he knew all this English. He does know English, just not all he said out to be. When he didn't know what a person said when he was translating to Firoozeh and Firoozeh's mother, he would say the person didn't know. For example, he couldn't translate back what Firoozeh and Firoozeh's mother wanted to eat, so he said the waitress didn't know what the food was.

Quote Pg. 10

"My mother's approach to learning English consisted of daily lessons with Monty Hall and Bob Barker. Her devotion to Let's Make a Deal and The Price is Right was evident in her new found ability to recite useless information."

I find it interesting that someone used TV to learn English. The downfall was that the shows she was watching made her say useless information. It makes me wonder why she didn't get something or someone to help her learn English.
